Gabrielle Union opens up about the pain and trauma she faced when Dwyane Wade had a son with someone else while they were on a break.
Union, 48, shared an excerpt of her upcoming book You Got Something Stronger? with Time, in which she discusses her troubles with infertility and how it crushed her when Wade told her he was expecting a child with someone else.
“In 2013, before we were married, Dwyane had a baby with another woman,” she wrote. “It should go without saying that we were not in a good place at the Time that child was conceived. But we were doing much better when he finally told me about the pregnancy,” she revealed.
The former basketball player is a father to Zaire, 18, Zaya, 12, and legal guardian to his nephew, Dahveon, 18. While the couple took a break from their relationship, he conceived son Xavier, who is now 7, with a longtime friend.
She continued, “To say I was devastated is to pick a word on a low shelf for convenience. There are people—strangers I will never meet—who have been upset that I have not previously talked about that trauma. I have not had words, and even after untold amounts of therapy I am not sure I have them now.”
The news destroyed Union, who was diagnosed with adenomyosis and had suffered multiple miscarriages. That’s when she started looking into surrogacy.
In 2018, the couple became parents to Kaavia James, now 2, in 2018, via a surrogate.
