Del Rio Mayor Bruno Lozano announced Friday afternoon that the Texas border town where mostly Haitian migrants camped out for several days is now completely empty.
More than 14,000 migrants arrived at the makeshift camp after crossing the southern border seeking asylum. Authorities claim the surge was a result of hearsay or social media messages that the border at Del Rio was open.
According to U.S. Border Patrol, more than 1,800 Haitian nationals have headed to U.S. Customs and Border Protection processing centers.
However, many of them face expulsion because they are not covered by the protection the Biden administration extended to the more than 100,000 Haitian migrants already in the U.S.
Del Rio Mayor Bruno Lozano said the clearing of the bridge was “phenomenal news,” in a press conference Friday.
