Luxury car company Rolls-Royce has announced that they are going all-electric by the year 2030.
The BMW-owned brand announced the move on Wednesday, following several other luxury automotive companies in their effort to switch to the environmentally friendly option. To kick off their electric line-up, Rolls-Royce will debut their inaugural electric-powered car called “Spectre.” Consumers can expect that vehicle in the fourth quarter of 2023.
“With this new product, we set out our credentials for the full electrification of our entire product portfolio by 2030,” revealed CEO of Rolls-Royce Torsten Muller-Otvos.
Rolls-Royce previously experimented with an all-electric Phantom called the 102EX in 2011 and another electric prototype, the 103EX, in 2016. The carmaker currently offers no hybrid options.
The company previously noted that a charging network needed to be established before their electric vehicles could become the norm. Electric BMW currently charges on EVgo’s network, which has just 800 fast chargers nationwide. The Rolls-Royce Spectre will likely be powered with a home charging system rather than the public option.
As of now, the company does not have an official end date for producing fossil fuel-burning cars.
