A father got the shock of a lifetime when a woman stole his SUV with his five kids inside as he was busy helping crash victims.

The brazen car theft and kidnapping took place on Sunday along U.S. Route 158 in Grandy, North Carolina, when Markell Hancox of Chesapeake, Virginia, got into a car accident with several other vehicles. A good Samaritan witnessed the crash and immediately stopped his truck to assist the crash victims.

Once out of his SUV, the man was busy helping people involved in the wreck while his children waited in the vehicle. Hancox then allegedly jumped in the man’s car and took off with the youngsters. Authorities say the woman sped north on U.S. 158 before pulling into a Hopp Inn parking lot in Grandy. She abandoned the SUV but was apprehended shortly after. Thankfully, the children were not hurt, though they were “extremely shaken.”

Hancox has been charged with five counts of second-degree kidnapping, leaving the scene of an accident, and theft of a motor vehicle. She remains held on a $210,000 bond at the Currituck County Detention Center.

A LinkedIn profile stated that Hancox was a Patient Account Representative with Sentara Healthcare. It is unclear why she was in North Carolina at the time or why she stole the man’s car with his children inside.
