A University of North Carolina sorority is now suspended after multiple members left due to racism.

On Wednesday, Alpha Xi Delta National Headquarters confirmed that the Zeta Tau chapter of Alpha Xi Delta had been suspended until further notice. The termination follows an August post on the chapter’s Facebook page, which stated that at least 17 members were leaving the organization. The post claimed that the sorority was not a “safe space” for people of color, Jewish people, or those who follow any religion outside of “white Christianity.”

The author of that post followed up a day later, detailing how multiple sorority sisters endured “repeated forms of discrimination” from white sisters. To address the racism, several members wanted to form a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) committee. However, chapter leaders blocked the committee, and the racial abuse continued. Members then escalated the racism to the national chapter, who also dismissed the concerns.

“There were plenty of chances for accountability, but white fragility was the overarching response,” the former member stated.

Following the chapter’s suspension, Alpha Xi Delta says they are working closely with the University of North Carolina to address the allegations.

“We do not tolerate racism or antisemitism of any kind, and we condemn all acts of bigotry, violence, and hatred,” their statement read.
