A pregnant Georgia woman was fatally shot alongside a highway by her married U.S. Army sergeant boyfriend Tuesday.
Alonzo Gargan Jr., 30, has been charged with murder, feticide, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. He was taken into custody at Fort Bragg.
The victim, identified as 29-year-old Akeila Ware, was found in her car on East Drummond Road around 12:50 p.m. She was shot and unresponsive, her vehicle riddled with bullets.Â
Ware, who was 33 weeks pregnant, was taken to an area hospital. She did not survive her injuries.
Law enforcement officials believe she was followed, shot at, and run off the road.Â
“We got a call for what we thought was a simple automobile accident,” Woodruff said. “It turned out to be a murder,” Troup County Sheriff James Woodruff said during a news conference.
“I went to the scene and could not believe that somebody had shot and killed a young mother of five children; on top of that, she had a baby inside of her and resulted in the death of that baby,” Woodruff said. “I personally went to the home of her father and had to deliver this news that your daughter is dead. That’s terrible news to have to hear from anybody, especially when it’s one of your children and grandchild.”
According to authorities, Ware and Dargan knew each other from school. He was reportedly the father of her unborn child. Dargan is married to another woman with whom he has children.Â
