A New Jersey teacher accused of removing a student’s hijab speaks out as the school district kicks the investigation into the incident up to the cops to investigate.
The teacher, Tamar Herman, claimed the incident inside a classroom at Seth Boyden Elementary on October 6th was a misunderstanding.
Through her lawyer, Herman claimed that the child was not wearing a hijab but a hooded sweatshirt that was covering her face during class.
“Last week, I asked one of my students to raise the hood of her sweatshirt because it was covering her eyes,” Herman said via her attorney.
“With her mask on, too, her whole face was covered. I gently got her attention by brushing up the front of her hood. The moment I realized she was not wearing her usual hijab underneath, she kept the hood on. And the learning went on,” Herman explained.
A lawyer for the student’s family completely disputed Herman’s claim in a counter-statement, saying, “I want to make it clear that we have obtained independent verification that completely supports the assertion of the student.”
