Black Child with ADHD Arrested for “Offensive Sketch” of School Bully

The Hawaii ACLU is now demanding change after a 10-year-old Black girl with ADHD was handcuffed and taken to a police station after drawing an “offensive sketch” of her alleged bully at school.

The child, identified as N.B., was reportedly questioned by cops at Honowai Elementary School in January 2020 without a parent or guardian present.

The ACLU also alleged in a letter sent to the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) and the state Department of Education (DOE) that the girl was also “handcuffed with excessive force” and transported to the local police station without being charged with a crime. The girl’s mother, Tamara Taylor, was also illegally detained.

In the letter, the ACLU claimed officials violated the girl’s constitutional rights and did not accommodate her federally protected disability – which is on record with the school. 

The ACLU claims a bully was targeting N.B. in the school, and the girl allegedly participated in an offensive sketch of that child.

The ACLU claims N.B. was handcuffed through the use of excessive force that left marks and was left hungry and exhausted after being in custody at the Pearl City Police station for nearly four hours.
