Authorities found what appears to be human remains near personal belongings believed to be Brian Laundrie’s, this missing fiance and person of interest in the murder of Gabby Petito.
FBI Tampa’s Michael McPherson shared the news in a Wednesday afternoon press conference. However, he did not confirm whether the remains were Laundrie’s or not.
The remains were found in Florida’s Carlton Natural Reserve in an area that was previously underwater. Sources also say nearby was a backpack consistent with items Laundrie likely had in his possession.
“Earlier today investigators found what appears to be human remains along with personal items, such as backpack and notebook, belonging to Brian Laundrie,” McPherson told reporters.
Laundrie’s parents directed FBI agents and North Port, Florida police to the area, according to their lawyer.
“Chris and Roberta Laundrie went to the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park this morning to search for Brian,” attorney Steven Bertolino said in a statement to multiple outlets. “The FBI and NPPD were informed last night of Brian’s parents’ intentions and they met Chris and Roberta there this morning. After a brief search off a trail that Brian frequented some articles belonging to Brian were found. As of now law enforcement is conducting a more thorough investigation of that area.”
The discovery comes 37 days after Laundrie was last seen by his parents.
