Dozens of Atlanta HBCU students gathered on Monday outside the Rush Memorial Congregational Church at the Atlanta University Center to show solidarity with Howard Students to demand that conditions in student housing improve.
Scholars from Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Morris Brown College, and Spelman College all joined forces to call out their respective institutions and demand improvements be made and to urge Georgia’s congressional delegation to provide more funding for their institutions and student loan debt relief.
Under the moniker “The Atlanta Student Movement Takeover,” the student protesters have slept in tents to demand that institutional and federal officials respond before they leave.
The students are also calling on U.S. Senators Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, and other state officials to push for what they say is the “much-needed” financial investment in HBCUs and other minority-serving institutions as was initially proposed as part of President Biden’s infrastructure bill.
Howard Students have been demonstrating and took over the Blackburn University Center for the second straight week to protest poor housing conditions on the campus, including buildings overrun with mold and vermin.
