PETA is calling for the Major League Baseball organization to change out the term “bullpen” for “arm barn.”
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals want the MLB to be more sensitive to the lives of cows by asking it to swap out the longtime term “bullpen” to “arm barn,” USA Today reports.
PETA’s Vice President called the word “bullpen” “outdated,” calling for a more “animal-friendly” alternative.
They highlighted how “bullpen” refers to the ways bulls are mistreated before being killed for food. In baseball, the term “bullpen” refers to the area pitchers use to warm up before taking the field.
“Words matter, and baseball’ bullpens’ devalue talented players and mock the misery of sensitive animals,” PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said in the release on Thursday. “PETA encourages Major League Baseball coaches, announcers, players, and fans to change up their language and embrace the ‘arm barn’ instead.”
Some people made a joke out of PETA’s suggestion, but the organization stood by its statement, saying the MLB would find some fun in taking on the new term. “Switching to arm barn’ would be a home run for baseball fans, players, and animals.”
