A new film will explore the notorious 2004 Super Bowl Halftime performance between Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake.

FX, Hulu, and the New York Times are coming together to present “Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson.” The doc will cover “Nipplegate,” as it was commonly referred to in the tabloids. The shocking moment when Timberlake ripped off a piece of Jackson’s bodice, exposing her right breast, has consumed media outlets for years, provoking think pieces and op-eds. Timberlake apologized years later for the stunt during their joint show. However, the act continues to captivate fans worldwide.

“Malfunction” will provide viewers an intimate look at the racial and cultural implications of the widely publicized wardrobe malfunction. Rare footage and interviews with several insiders involved with the 2004 Super Bowl Halftime show will also be featured in the doc. NFL and MTV executives, members of the Jackson family, and cultural experts will share new insights on the moment as well as former CBS executive Les Moonves’ role in “Nipplegate.”

The documentary will premiere on November 19th at 10:00 p.m. on both FX and Hulu. Neither Jackson nor Timberlake participated in the special.
