An Indiana man has been accused of shooting at a group of trick-or-treaters, taking the life of one of them.
On Wednesday, 23-year-old Desmond Crews was charged with attempted murder after he was accused of fatally shooting Thomas DeLaCruz Jr. on Halloween. NBC News reports he also allegedly wounded another 13-year-old. DeLaCruz was a resident of East Chicago.
NBC News reports that one of the trick-or-treaters got into a verbal exchange with the man for about 30 to 45 minutes before he opened fire. The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. when the man threatened to get a gun and shoot them. At one point, the kids saw a car filled with five or six people who were watching them.
The man who allegedly threatened one of the kids got out of the car along with some of the people in the vehicle. That’s when a man took a “shooting stance,” and shots were fired.
DeLaCruz’s mother says her child was just a regular kid on Halloween. “He was being a kid out with his aunt trick-or-treating, walking with a group of kids,” DeLaCruz’s mother, Jasmine Anderson, told The Times of Northwest Indiana. “And some ignorant, sick person decided to shoot at kids.”
