Apple to Start Selling Parts to Customers for DIY iPhones Repairs

For anyone with a niche for DIY projects, Apple has announced that they will sell you parts to fix your own iPhone in the comfort of your home.

The “Self Service Repair” program comes after years of pushback against third-party repair shops. In the past, Apple has urged consumers to bring their products directly to its stores if they need to be fixed.

Self Service Repair will launch early next year and allows Apple users to buy tools and parts that can be used to repair iPhone 12 and 13 display, battery, and camera. They are planning to introduce instruments for other Apple products as well, such as Macs and M1 chips. In the early stages, the tech giant plans to sell over 200 parts and tools. Those who purchase the DIY kits will also be given instructions on how to do the repairs.

COO Jeff Williams says the initiative gives Apple customers “even more choice if a repair is needed.”

The new program will be available in the United States first before expanding to other countries. While this service empowers those who do not have the patience to stand in often crowded Apple stores, the company stated that its self-service program is only meant for “individual technicians with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices.” They advise most buyers to still take their broken Apple products to a professional because if the product is damaged during the self-repair, it could void the device’s warranty.

Apple has not yet announced the service costs but says that customers will receive recycling credit if they return their used parts after the repair is finished.
