The White House announced that President Joe Biden will hand over control to Vice President Kamala Harris while he is under anesthesia for a routine colonoscopy.
In a message to White House reporters, Press Secretary Jen Psaki emphasized that the same procedure was followed in 2002 and 2007, when then-President George W. Bush had the same medical treatment.
“As was the case when President George W. Bush had the same procedure in 2002 and 2007, and following the process set out in the Constitution, President Biden will transfer power to the Vice President for the brief period of time when he is under anesthesia,” she said. “The Vice President will work from her office in the West Wing during this time.”
According to a book written by Donald Trump’s third press secretary, Stephanie Grisham, Trump refused anesthesia for a medical operation because he didn’t want to give control to then-Vice President Mike Pence.
This afternoon, the White House said it will release a written account of Biden’s physical examination.
