Connecticut health officials have issued a warning to the public about fentanyl-laced marijuana after a recent rash of overdoses throughout the state.
Officials explained that 39 overdoses requiring the use of naloxone for revival were reported in the state since July.
In each case, the individual involved said they had only smoked marijuana, but officials believed that they exhibited opioid symptoms.
A cluster of cases was reported in Plymouth in October, though officials say incidents have been dispersed across the state. Some of the marijuana in those cases was tested, and results confirmed the presence of fentanyl.
“This is the first lab-confirmed case of marijuana with fentanyl in Connecticut and possibly the first confirmed case in the United States,” Dr. Manisha Juthani, Department of Public Health Commissioner, stated.
This new warning comes after news that an estimated 100,000 Americans died of drug overdoses in the last year.
