An unknown assailant gunned down a young couple in their Georgia home, police said. Their toddler was found unharmed in the house early Thursday morning, hours after they had died.
Cherokee County firefighter Justin Hicks, and his wife Amber, were found dead from gunshot wounds inside their Acworth home around 9:30 a.m.
A neighbor, Hannah Mabrey, described when an officer came rushing out of the house with the couple’s 2-year-old son to WAGA-TV. She said the officer had the boy by the torso and handed him over to his grandparents, who were screaming, “Where’s my baby?”
The couple, both 31, had recently moved into the neighborhood and were excited about being homeowners. Cherokee County Fire Chief Tim Prather described Hicks as a “happy, funny, loved by many kind of guy.” Hicks had been with the department for six years.
Cobb police spokesman Sgt. Wayne Delk said, “this is being investigated as a double homicide.” He said that so far, the investigation has not uncovered any evidence this is a murder-suicide. It is believed the shooting happened sometime between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
One or more unknown assailants carried out the murder, but no evidence suggests the suspect stayed in the area.
Investigators have not said what a possible motive for the shooting is, yes.
