Kehlani has now said that they prefer to go by non-binary pronouns.
On Tuesday, Kehlani sat with Byrdie Magazine where she explains using she/they pronouns. Kehlani says that when people use ‘they’ it feels affirming.
“I don’t mind when people say ‘she’ at all, but something feels really affirming when people say ‘they’. It feels like…you really see me,” she says.
Earlier this year, Kehlani confirmed her sexual preferences and came out as lesbian. The singer says that instead of focusing on “coming out,” she rather focus on the journey. “I wish it was more of a journey discovering how I love and what I need versus putting the emphasis on having to ‘come out’ with my sexual identity.”
The singer also speaks on having privilege in the industry as a “cisgender-presenting, straight-presenting” person. “I think a lot of artists who we talk about and say, ‘Oh, they had to come out or they had to do this,’ a lot of them can’t hide it. A lot of it is very [much] in how they present. It’s tougher for them. It’s tougher for trans artists. It’s tougher for Black gay men. It’s tougher for Black masculine gay women.”
Kehlani is set to release her newest album ‘Blue Water Road’ in early 2022. The album will talk about ‘love and coming into gayness.’
