The FDA has approved eye drops that reportedly temporarily improve declining vision in middle-aged groups of people.
Back in October, the FDA approved a potential replacement for reading glasses in the form of eye drops that people can simply drop in their eyes to improve their blurred vision. Allergan created the VUITY eye drops which reportedly work just 15 minutes after application.
CBS News reports that eye drops will give a person sharper vision for six to 10 hours. “It’s definitely a life-changer,” said Toni Wright to CBS. Wright was one of the 750 people who participated in the clinical trial for the eye drops.
The eye drops work by using the eye’s natural ability to reduce its pupil size, says Dr. George Waring, the principal investigator for the trial, CBS News reports. “Reducing the pupil size expands the depth of field or the depth of focus, and that allows you to focus at different ranges naturally,” he said.
The eye drops will cost $80 for a 30-day supply. The drops reportedly work better for people who are in their 40s and 50s. Some of the side effects of the medication included headaches and red eyes. The company says the drops are not a permanent cure for declining eyesight and should not be used while driving at night or doing activities with insufficient lighting.
