A man was sentenced to jail in Nanning, southern China for stealing $23,500 from his ex-girlfriend’s bank account by using her phone’s facial recognition feature while she was sleeping.
According to the Global Times, the suspect who was only identified by his last name, Huang, 28, was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison for the crime.
In December of last year, Huang was found guilty of lifting up his ex-girlfriend’s eyelids to activate the face recognition feature so he could access her online banking app.
Investigators say that Huang transferred $23,500 from his ex-girlfriend’s accounts to his own.
As soon as she realized her money was missing, she reported it to the police.
Huang had asked to meet with his ex-girlfriend so they could talk about how he would repay the $9,400 he borrowed from her while they were dating, according to his ex-girlfriend.
When the ex got there, Huang volunteered to cook and get her medicine because she felt sick.
After taking the medicine, the victim claimed she fell asleep.
Huang was fined around $3,000 in addition to his prison sentence.
