A new independent autopsy shows that former NFL pro Glenn Foster Jr. had passed away due to strangulation.

Foster was arrested in Reform, Alabama, on December 4th after taking police on a high-speed chase. On December 5th, he was supposed to be released from Pickens County jail but was re-booked after allegedly fighting with another inmate and two officers. The following day, a judge ordered that Foster be transferred to another facility to be treated with medication. However, on December 6th, when Foster was to be transported to the facility, he was pronounced dead. The jail claimed the man died from natural causes, though his family and the new autopsy vehemently refute this.

Ben Crump, who is now representing the Foster family, said that Dr. Michael Baden confirmed that “neck compressions and strangulation” caused Foster’s death. The civil rights attorney said the findings are “deeply concerning” and require a “transparent investigation.”

Foster’s father, Glenn Foster Sr., says that the former New Orleans Saints defensive end battled with bipolar disorder for at least ten years and was having a manic episode before taking police on the chase that ultimately led to a crash and his arrest. Foster Sr. also revealed that he was told his son was taken to the hospital by a police cruiser instead of an ambulance.

The investigation remains ongoing.
