Far-right radio show host Alex Jones has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Select Committee House, which is investigating the U.S. Capitol riot and attacks. He allegedly won’t cooperate with the committee’s demands.
The January 6 committee that is looking into the attacks made on the U.S. Capitol at the beginning of this year has requested that Jones – among others – share any insight they have regarding that day. Over the past few weeks, the committee has attempted to gain phone records from more than 100 people, with Jones being one of them. In addition, it has sent out subpoenas to at least 50 people, CNN reports.
Jones allegedly claims in his suit that the committee requested that he testify on January 10. CNN reports that Jones’ lawsuit was filed in an effort to block being subpoenaed. He also says he won’t answer any questions so that he doesn’t incriminate himself.
Last week, a committee aide informed CNN that Jones was “engaging” with the panel. However, Jones says the conversations he had with the group were allegedly unproductive, adding that he allegedly is fearful of being held up by the Justice Department for criminal contempt. Jones was reportedly okay with answering questions in written form rather than in an interview. After that, the committee allegedly refused to move forward with his records.
“Jones has notified the Select Committee that he intends to plead his right to remain silent under the Fifth Amendment,” the lawsuit states, CNN reports. “The Select Committee has suggested that it may turn to the courts to seek a grant of immunity for Jones and other witnesses.”
Jones is also taking a subpoena the House sent to AT&T. The phone company allegedly told Jones that it would cooperate with the committee and turn over records on December 16. “The Select Committee has requested countless documents that Jones possesses for various subjects including about his participation in legally permitted protests in Washington, D.C., financial transactions pertaining to those protests, and documents sufficient to determine how he promoted the protests,” wrote Jones’ attorneys in a complaint, CNN reports.
