A Japanese professor has created a television that allows viewers to taste food just by licking it.

Look, it’s 2021, and you just never know what’s next up these days. Well, one of those things is Taste the TV (TTTV), a device that can reportedly imitate food flavors and allow a person to taste up to 10 flavors. Reuters reports that there are 10 flavors in spray canisters that shoot a specific taste of food onto a clean sheet of film that then covers a section of the television for viewers to try.

The creator of this unique device is Meiji University professor Homei Miyashita. “The goal is to make it possible for people to have the experience of something like eating at a restaurant on the other side of the world, even while staying at home,” he said.

While Homei led the TV’s creation, he worked with 30 students who have also helped him produce forks that make food taste richer. Homei says he made the television’s prototype last year and that if it cost about $85,000 to make.

And his creativeness has paid off in new deals, as he’s reportedly about to sit down with a few companies about how his spray can be used for future applications. Some of the ideas that may be set in stone are flavored sprays that can be used on a piece of bread.
