The 79th Golden Globes award ceremony will be private this year.
The event, held in Beverly Hills, will not air on television, and there will not be a live stream for people to watch online.
“This year’s event is going to be a private event and will not be live-streamed,” a representative announced via the organization’s page. It was also announced the award show would not have a red carpet or celebrity presenters for the ceremony.
The Golden Globes plan to offer real-time updates of winners on its website and social media pages. There will not be an audience for the Jan 9 event due to the surge in COVID-19 cases, the Hollywood Foreign Association announced.
The audience will solely be made up of HFPA members and recipients of their philanthropic efforts. The “select members and grantees” in attendance will have to show proof of vaccination.
Despite the lack of a public audience, the HFPA says the event will spotlight the group’s charity work and unveil its new collaboration with the NAACP to “increase diversity, equity, and inclusion across the global entertainment industry.”
After a wave of terrible press last year, NBC announced that they would no longer be hosting the annual ceremony, and it seems that much of the industry is in a small boycott. The Globes have yet to announce if there will be a host for the award show.
