Over 28,000 pounds of ground beef have been recalled over a possible E. coli contamination.

Thousands of pounds of meat that were sold at major grocery stores – including Walmart and Kroger – were recalled after it was found that they may have been contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. This is all according to a recall notice posted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service this past Thursday. USA Today reports the items were produced by Interstate Meat Dist. Inc., of Clackamas, Oregon.

The items that were sold at Walmart that were included on the notice were: 1-pound All Natural Ground Beef 90% lean, 10% fat, 1-pound All Natural Ground Beef 93% lean, 7% fat, and 3-pound All Natural Ground Beef 93% lean, 7% fat. They all were labeled to be used by Jan. 11, 2022. Kroger’s recalled products included 1-pound Kroger Ground Beef 93% lean, 7% fat: UPC 11110-97977 and 3-pound Kroger Ground Beef 93% lean, 7% fat: UPC 11110-97975. They also were labeled to be used by Jan. 11, 2022. Albertsons and Safeway also had ground beef products that were recalled.

The products were shipped to several states, including Wyoming, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Utah, and California. USA Today reports that the USDA classified the announcement as a “Class I” recall, which is said to be a “health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”

Those who may have purchased the products are advised to return to the stores they were brought from or throw the items away.
