There’s also the backlog of millions of unprocessed regular and amended returns from the 2020 tax year, budget cuts, and workforce impacts from the pandemic, as the IRS had to close processing centers.
If you file online, the agency claims you have a greater chance of receiving it within the standard 21-day period.
In some areas of the country, there are, however, some extensions available for tornado, storm and wildfire victims.
