Nick Cannon is reflecting on his 10-year-long battle with lupus in a special documentary. He reveals the disease “almost took” his life before the diagnosis.
On his daytime talk show, Nick shared how he documented his journey with the life-threatening battle. The six-minute video starts with Cannon talking about how he was just enjoying his time with his children and then-wife Mariah Carey to suddenly waking up in the hospital. He experienced much swelling and shortness of breath.
The doctors told him he was having kidney failure. The doctor then tells him “you have a lot of Edema.” Edema is swelling caused by fluid trapped in the body’s tissues.
The actor’s video starts on Jan. 3, 2012, when he is unaware he has a disease. He started experiencing excruciating swelling in his stomach, legs, and chest. The doctors discover he has two blood clots in his lungs which are very threatening. Nick narrates, “It’s the last place you wanna be, man. Doctors telling you you could die.”
Throughout the documentary, he talks about how he has to alter his lifestyle. After finding out he was diagnosed with lupus, Cannon started taking the right steps towards bettering his health.

He says,“[Lupus] is something I’m going to be living with all my life. I feel blessed to be alive. If it wasn’t discovered, I don’t know.”
