A woman has sued her sperm donor and given their baby up for adoption after finding out he lied about graduating college and having a wife.

A 30-year-old woman from Tokyo was eager to have a second child with her husband. Once she realized he had a hereditary condition, she decided to be impregnated by someone else. The couple set their sights on a sperm donor, turning to social media to locate their perfect match. That is when they came upon a man in his 20’s who appeared to be the ideal candidate.

According to Newsweek, the man claimed to be a single graduate from a prestigious university in Japan. The woman quickly jumped at the opportunity, and the two had sex ten times in June 2019. However, shortly after she conceived, she learned that the man had lied about his life to sleep with her. The donor was, in fact, married and did not attend the college he claimed he did. Furious, the woman was too far to have an abortion, so she gave birth to the child and quickly turned it over to a Tokyo child care facility.

The victim is now taking action against the fraudster sperm donor, suing him for 330 million yen ($2.86 million) for emotional distress.

Sperm banks do not exist in Japan, leaving many women relying on social media and sketchy websites to find donors. Hiroshi Okada, director of the Mirai Life Research Institute, is encouraging women to seek another route, calling the practice of using social media to find a donor “extremely dangerous.” He says even the multiple websites promising legit donors are merely hook-up schemes, with people lying for sex.
