Regina King and her family are mourning the loss of her son, Ian Alexander Jr., who took his own life on Friday.
B. Scott broke the news that Alexander Jr. passed away from suicide, though details surrounding his death are scarce. The blossoming DJ had just celebrated his 26th birthday on Wednesday.
The Oscar award-winning actress and producer confirmed the tragic news and gave a statement to PEOPLE in the early Saturday morning hours. She shared that her family is “devastated at the deepest level” following Alexander Jr.’s untimely passing.
“He is such a bright light who cared so deeply about the happiness of others. Our family asks for respectful consideration during this private time. Thank you,” King stated.
King has never shied away from her love for her son, previously referring to him as an “amazing young man.” Alexander Jr. has also gloated over his mother, calling her “super mom.”
Alexander Jr. was King’s only child that she shared with ex-husband, record producer Ian Alexander Sr. The couple divorced in 2007 after nine years of marriage.
