A Connecticut teacher is facing charges after leaving her children home alone while vacationing with her boyfriend in Florida. Both children were under age 12 and were told to “just eat candy” over the long weekend in November.
Kerry Lyn Caviasca, 36, was arrested on January 15. She is charged with risk of injury to a minor and reckless endangerment.
An arrest warrant released on Thursday revealed that the children’s father notified police they had been left alone from November 20 to the 22nd. Both children missed school that Monday with unexcused absences.
Aaron Caviasca discovered several dozen text messages between his ex-wife and the children, revealing that she had been out of town. Some of the messages questioned whether or not she had boarded a plane.
The texts also revealed that Caviasca insisted that the children stay in the basement to avoid detection. They were left with snacks, and Uber Eats food orders were delivered several times.
Caviasca admitted to police that she had gone to Florida with her boyfriend. However, she told them the children were home with her brother. Police contacted her brother’s employer, who stated he was at work the days the kids were home.
When questioned, the children told police they were home alone from Saturday to Monday. The kids told investigators there was no one home with them except the dog. They also admitted they texted their mom to ask permission to use the bathroom and were told, “Quick. No lights.”
The kids’ father took custody of them on December 17 after receiving a temporary emergency custody order.
Caviasca was placed on leave from her job as a teacher with the Waterbury Public Schools. The district has launched its own investigation.
“Waterbury Public Schools has been informed of a pending allegation regarding a Waterbury Public School staff member,” the district said in a statement. “The alleged actions do not represent the values of our district. The teacher has been placed on leave while the district conducts an investigation.”
Caviasca was released on a $5,000 bond, and her next scheduled court appearance is set for January 25.
