A woman died Sunday when a draw bridge in West Palm Beach, Florida, was raised while she was walking across with her bike.

West Palm Beach police said the woman, who is not identified, was walking across the Royal Park Bridge at around 1 p.m.

The woman was reportedly 10 feet from the end when the bridge rose, and she fell through a gap.

According to West Palm Beach police spokesman Mike Jachles, “The woman tried to hang on.”

He said, “There was a bystander nearby who tried to help her, but tragically she fell five or six stories below where she died landing on concrete.”

He mentioned that the bridge is managed by a bridge tender which is in charge of adhering to safety regulations.

The woman’s death is currently being investigated as to why the bridge was lifted while a pedestrian was still on it.

According to authorities, the bridge was closed for six hours due to the death and was reopened around 7 p.m.
