Dave Chappelle spoke out at a recent council meeting in Yellow Springs, Ohio, to oppose a plan to offer an affordable housing portion a new development being constructed in the area.
A plan for “Oberer Homes” can move forward but, it will no longer include the affordable housing that was initially planned as part of a development of single-family homes, townhomes, and duplexes to be built on a 53-acre area at the south edge of town.
Chappelle was one of the numerous residents who spoke during the meeting. The wealthy comedian with a deep stake in community development spoke out against the proposal.
Chappelle took the mic and questioned why the council would support the housing plan “while it kicks out a $65 million-a-year company.”
“I cannot believe you would make me audition for you,” Chappelle said. “You look like clowns. I am not bluffing. I will take it all off the table,” he’s recorded saying in a video posted on the Yellow Springs community access page.
The comedian plans to open a restaurant and a comedy club in the area under his Iron Table Holdings LLC company.
His publicist, Carla Sims, told CNN, “Dave Chappelle didn’t kill affordable housing. Concerned residents and a responding Village Council ‘killed’ a half-baked plan which never actually offered affordable housing.”
