On Thursday, hundreds of Porsches, Audis, and Lamborghinis were stranded on a crewless cargo ship in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
According to the Portuguese Military, crew members of the 650-foot-long Felicity Ace were evacuated from the transport ship to a hotel in the Azores Islands. The ship was adrift 100 miles from the Portuguese archipelago. There were no injuries among the 22 crew members.
Authorities said that a Portugal navy ship had examined the burning ship to see if it was in danger of sinking while it was still billowing clouds of white smoke.
Since the ship was en route to Rhode Island from Germany, it is unlikely to be towed to a harbor in the archipelago, more than 900 miles from the European mainland.
According to Bloomberg, the ship carried 3,965 Volkswagen AG vehicles, including 1,100 Porsches.
In an internal company email seen by the outlet, Volkswagen’s parent firm manufacturers said its own Volkswagen brand, as well as Porsche, Audi, and Lamborghini models were also on board.
“Our immediate thoughts are of relief that the 22 crew of the merchant ship Felicity Ace are safe and well. Anyone concerned by this incident and the implications on the car they’ve ordered should contact their Porsche dealer,” the statement read.
