Two Detroit teenagers are in custody for a triple homicide that included the execution-style shooting of a 5-year-old boy.
The juvenile boys, aged 16 and 17, were taken into custody without incident on Monday and are being held in a youth home. They have not yet been formally charged.
The bodies of 5-year-old Caleb Harris, his mother Lashon Marshall, and her boyfriend, Aaron Benson, were discovered by a relative on Sunday evening. The concerned family member had not heard from the family in weeks. The boy had been shot twice in the face.Â
Police received tips from the community identifying the suspects, according to Detroit Police Chief James White. A search warrant for their arrest was issued, and they were located in the neighborhood.Â
“We are confident that we have those responsible in custody,” White said.
Police said that the two suspects were known to the victims. A motive has not been revealed, and the shooting is still under investigation.Â
NBC News reports that Caleb was just shy of celebrating his sixth birthday.Â
“I imagine the family was probably prepping for a birthday celebration, and tragically their plans have changed,” Detroit Police Commander Michael McGinnis said.
