Niecy Nash and Jessica Betts have made Essence history as the first same-sex couple to grace the cover.
The stunning digital cover showcased the actress and musician in various settings doting over one another with the title, “A Love Like This.” The couple detailed their whirlwind romance and what draws them to one another in their cover story.
“The least of my attraction is gender,” Nash revealed. Neither she nor Betts places restrictive labels on their sexualities. The “Claws” star said that it was Betts “beautiful soul” that attracted her.
“I can’t imagine going through life without it,” she gloated over her wife.
The couple initially met on social media in 2015 when Nash followed Betts after becoming a fan of her music. Nash was still married to her ex-husband Jay Tucker at the time. However, once that marriage ended, she and Betts elevated beyond friendship, though Nash was “reluctant” initially. The 52-year-old says that accepting that she had developed feelings for a woman was “challenging,” especially considering that the woman was a friend.
I thought, ‘What I do not want to do is anything that would allow this person to not be in my life for the rest of my life,'” she shared.
Nevertheless, nearly two years later, the couple is in marital bliss, which they often showcase on their social media platforms.
