The Grammy’s is paying homage to several female rappers who have pushed the culture forward and shaped the world of hip-hop.

To celebrate Women’s History Month, Grammy.com unveiled their 5 Women Essential To Rap list on Friday. The women on the list are pioneers who have broken boundaries and opened doors for rappers and creators after them.

MC Lyte was first up on the list, being the first Grammy-nominated female rapper. Up next was Sylvia Robinson, the “Mother of Hip-Hop” who founded Sugar Hill Records. Lil Kim followed for her contribution to shaping fashion in the female hip-hop community and normalizing sexuality. Cardi B was up next for her numerous accomplishments, including becoming the first female rapper to secure the Best Rap Album at the 61st GRAMMY Awards. Last but not least, Tierra Whack was listed for her willingness to step outside of the box through eccentric fashion and strong lyrical capabilities.

Though not on the list, Nicki Minaj was mentioned in the article for her stellar performance with Doja Cat in the “Say So” remix. The record marked the first time that a female rap collaboration topped the chart. Queen Latifah and Salt-N-Pepa were also pointed out in the full article.
