Instagram has introduced a new tagging feature to display more details about a person to help credit content creators and collaborators.

According to The Verge, the Enhanced Tags feature will now show the roles of collaborators — like photographers, stylists, artists, writers, and other creators — who work on content but aren’t always immediately visible unless specifically mentioned by a post’s creator.

The popular social media platform announced the updated tagging options and acknowledged that it takes the work of many collaborators to create the content users see on the app.

“For many Black and underrepresented creators, crediting is an entryway to building a sustainable career as a creator while combating cultural appropriation and ensuring the world knows who is driving culture,” Instagram said in its announcement.

The platform said the feature would be used to highlight behind-the-scenes creators whose hard work sometimes goes unnoticed or unacknowledged, like makeup artists or songwriters.

The enhanced tags are IG’s official way to display what some creators and influencers have already been doing. In the past, Instagram users have found several DIY methods of crediting the people involved in creating content. Some users specify roles in the caption of posts and tag collaborators there, while others have tagged a flurry of handles directly into the photo or video posted.

Users who want to use this tagging option can do so when uploading content by tagging accounts and tapping “show profile category” to display their roles.
