We just set our clocks forward this past Sunday and it might be one of the last times we ever have to make the switch again.

Tuesday the U.S. Senate unanimously voted in favor of the Sunshine Protection Act, which would make daylight saving time permanent. If the bill is passed in the House and signed by President Joe Biden, Americans would no longer have to change their clocks twice a year.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), the lead sponsor of the proposal said the move was “a big, sensible step forward,” Tuesday on Twitter.  He previously shared a number of benefits to making daylight saving time permanent.

“There’s strong science behind it that is now showing and making people aware of the harm that clock switching has, there’s an increase in heart attacks, car accidents and pedestrian accidents,” he said.

If enacted into law, Americans would no longer lose an hour of daylight in the fall but it would also mean early risers would lose an hour of daylight in the mornings from November-February.

According to an AP poll, most Americans want to stop switching between daylight saving and standard time. However, there’s a divide between which should be used all year.

Are y’all in favor of daylight savings time being permanent?

If the bill is signed into law, the change would not take place until November 2023, Reuters reports.
