According to the Russian news agency TASS, Britney Griner’s detention in Russia has been extended until May 19.

The Khimkinsky court of the Moscow region has ordered Griner to remain in jail for at least another two months.

“The court granted the investigation petition and extended the term of U.S. citizen Griner’s detention until May 19,” TASS reported.

Griner was sharing a cell with two other women with no previous convictions, according to Ekaterina Kalugina, a member of the Public Monitoring Commission, a semi-official body with access to Russian prisons, who added that Griner’s only issue was that the prison beds were too short for her.

The Russian Customs Service, which has not identified Griner, said earlier this month that a player was detained at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport in February after arriving from New York.

A source told TASS that the player was Griner. The Mercury said without elaborating: “We are aware of and closely monitoring the situation with Brittney Griner in Russia.”

After scanning the player’s luggage, the customs service found cartridges containing “liquid with hashish oil,” and a criminal case has been opened with a sentence of five to 10 years in prison, officials said.

As of early February, it was unclear when Griner, who plays for UMMC Ekaterinburg in the WNBA offseason, was detained.

The Biden administration has assigned a team to work on Griner’s case, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced during a joint press conference with Moldovan President Maia Sandu.
