Over the weekend, several spring breakers were injured in two separate shootings in Miami Beach, which led the city to declare a state of emergency and impose a curfew.

On Monday, Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber said during a press conference, “We didn’t ask for spring break, and we don’t want it.” He said, “Our city is past its endpoint.”

The curfew will be in effect from 12:01 a.m. Thursday until 6 a.m. Monday, primarily in the South Beach area.

According to officials, the same curfew will be implemented next weekend.

The two shootings on Ocean Drive resulted in the hospitalization of five people. Two women were shot around 1 a.m. on Monday and three others around midnight on Sunday.

In addition, four police officers were also injured while clearing the crowd from the streets.

“We just simply cannot have people come to our city and have to worry about being shot,” Gelber said. “That’s not a way a city can operate.”

According to Local10, both shootings occurred as spring breakers were celebrating outdoors, and panicked crowds fled for safety, causing property damage and disrupting traffic.

19-year-old gunman, Derrick Antonio Mitchell, was detained in connection with the shooting that left two women injured on Monday morning.

“I only shot because they shot at me first,” Mitchell told cops when he was taken into custody, according to his arrest affidavit.

Another gunman got away and is still wanted by authorities. No other suspects have been identified in connection with Sunday’s shooting.
