Malia Obama to Direct Her First Short Film Under Donald Glover’s New Production Company

Malia Obama has secured a new gig as a writer on Donald Glover’s new show, “Hive.”

Glover confirmed that he brought the “amazingly talented” former First Daughter on board in a recent interview with Vanity Fair. The part-time rapper also made it clear that hiring Malia was not due to her parent’s status.

“She’s really focused, and she’s working really hard,” Glover said of the recent Harvard graduate.

While news of Malia pursuing a career in scriptwriting may surprise some, the young woman has been quietly pushing towards her filmmaking dreams for years. Malia previously worked as a production assistant for CBS’s “Extant” in 2014. The following year, she interned on Lena Dunham’s HBO series “Girls.” During her time at Harvard, Malia majored in Visual and Environmental Studies, which is marked by hands-on technical camera and editing courses and film analysis. Last year, the 23-year-old moved to Los Angeles to leave her mark on Hollywood.

Glover’s brother, Stephen, who is also working on the Amazon series, praised Malia and is looking forward to having her in the writer’s room.

“I feel like she’s just somebody who’s gonna have really good things coming soon,” Stephen shared.

While little is known about “Hive,” the series is said to focus on the fan obsession surrounding a “‘Beyoncé-like figure.” A release date has not yet been announced.
