A Texas middle school teacher has resigned after she put hand sanitizer on a student’s hands and lit them on fire during a school science experiment, resulting in the child being burned.
On Friday, Granbury police arrived at Granbury Middle School after receiving a “report of a student who had been burned on campus.” Yahoo! Life reports that the teacher, identified as a 37-year-old, “put hand sanitizer in the hands of a 12-year-old male student and lit the hand sanitizer as part of a science experiment.”
According to police, this wasn’t the first time the teacher had performed the activity with students. They say the experiment was “done multiple times throughout the day with other students without incident.” But this time around, the child ended up suffering third-degree burns. No new details on his condition have been reported, Yahoo! Life reports.
After an investigation, police say the incident will be escalated to the district attorney. The Granary Independent School District released a statement saying the teacher was no longer employed following their resignation.
