In a recent interview, Pusha T spoke with Charlamagne Tha God to promote his forthcoming album “It’s Almost Dry” and opened up about fatherhood, his spot in the hip hop industry, No Malice, and more.
At one point, Pusha T also discussed his late parents — mother, Mildred Thornton, who passed in November, and his father, Gene Elliott Thornton Sr., who died last month. As he spoke, he became both emotional and transparent and revealed that he continues to mourn his and his family’s loss to this day:
“Dealing with grief, man, well, I think the one thing that’s helping me deal with grief right now, my parents passed four months apart….”
Charlamagne then chimed in, saying his opinion that “one couldn’t live without the other.”
An opinion the Virginia talent agreed with.
“Well, I look at it like this … I just know I was good with my parents. Both of them. Like really good. So, I grieve selfishly. I’m grieving now. … They aiight, I know it….Legacy is everything right now for me. Because I understand that in their passing, you know, I have so many great things to reference, and with a tainted legacy, you don’t have that. You know, I think about my son, and he’s gonna be able to look at the legacy of his dad and be like, ‘Aw man, he was like amazing.’ ‘Cause, that’s my goal.’ Cause they were amazing.”
He also compared the loss of his parents to losing someone to the streets before Charlamagne decided to ask whether or not the rapper had sought therapy to work through the tragedy.
Pusha T and his brother Malice announced their father’s passing last month in a touching Instagram tribute.
“I love you Dad…you taught me to remain poised, to always be calculated, to be prideful, and to respect hustle and hard work but to know the difference between the two,” he wrote. “I am who I am because of you and I’ve always been proud to be your son. We are all gonna miss you… R.I.P. Gene Elliott Thornton Sr. P.S. We all know what this is abt, kiss my mom for me.”
