A 6-year-old Texas girl was found unconscious and dangling from a tree after being swept up in a tornado on Tuesday. The rest of her family also ended up in the hospital with critical injuries after their mobile home was destroyed.
Four members of the Rios family were in their trailer when they got the tornado warning. The family tried to flee, but the hail from the EF-3 tornado forced them back into their home.
The mobile home was decimated after being hit with peak winds of 165 mph. Each member of the family was tossed hundreds of yards from the house.
Miriam Rios, 6, was found unconscious and hanging from a cedar tree. Her mother, Vanessa Rios, suffered a miscarriage. Joel Rios, her father, was thrown in yet another direction. Her little brother Ezra Rios, 1, was located in a nearby field.
The entire family was taken to the hospital, where they had all undergone various surgeries. The baby was injured the least and is expected to be released from the hospital soon.
The Rios family may have escaped with their lives, but they have lost everything else. The children’s uncle, Stephen Perez, created a GoFundMe to help relieve some of the financial burdens the family is facing. The online fundraiser had raised more than $72,000 toward its $80,000 goal on Saturday evening.
“Everyone is doing OK!” Miriam’s aunt, Naomi Benavides, told the New York Post.
KFVS-TV reports that the twister injured 23 people, with 12 of them severe enough to be hospitalized. Thankfully, there were no deaths reported as a result of the storm. At least 61 homes were destroyed, including two churches.
