Instagram is threatening repercussions for content creators who bring TikTok videos to their platform and use them as Reels.

As you know, IG pays creators to post Reels, their short-form videos, which has made them a direct competitor of TikTok. However, to capitalize on both platforms, many creators upload their TikTok videos as Reels, something that the platform will begin to crack down on.

In an update released this week, Instagram reiterated that it wants original content only. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, dropped a video detailing its new ranking system and how creators can be negatively ranked if their content is not specifically made for IG. He explained that by posting content from other websites, users would be downranked by its algorithm. This means that people could see less money from Reels.

Instagram and how they payout for Reels have come under fire recently. Many creators have slammed the platform for paying them less money after initially guaranteeing large bonuses. The program promised to pay $1 billion to creators through 2022. However, many users have complained that the platform is now requiring unrealistic amounts of views to be compensated

Instagram did not explain why the payouts have decreased or if they’ve reached their $1 billion limit. The company previously stated that the Reels program payouts would fluctuate as they experiment with the pricing model while in the testing phase.

In their update announcement, Instagram also unveiled a new Product Tagging system, which allows all users to tag products shown in their posts. This feature was originally only available for creator and business accounts.
