Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt has signed off on a bill that bans nonbinary gender markers from being included on in-state documents.

On Tuesday, Stitt made history as the first U.S. state to ever have a ban that blocks nonbinary gender markers from being placed on state documents, including birth certificates. While many states around the country have opted to provide nonbinary selections, Oklahoma isn’t welcoming it.

This all comes after the Oklahoma State Department was sued by Oklahoma native Kit Loreleid, who sought to have the gender marker on their birth certificate changed to “X.” The State Department settled the lawsuit and allowed the gender marker to be updated to nonbinary, ABC News reports.

But, later, Stitt came back with an executive order that sought to ban people from changing their birth certificates to represent their gender identity. Lambda Legal is currently in an ongoing lawsuit with the state, and it aims to allow transgender people the freedom to update their gender marker on personal Oklahoma birth certificates, ABC News reports.
