Swiss Police Seize More Than A Half-Ton Of Cocaine Stored In Nespresso Coffee Bean Shipment

Police in Switzerland have seized more than 500 kilograms of cocaine stored in a shipment of coffee beans.

A shipment of coffee beans was on its way from Switzerland to a Nespresso plant. Nespresso is owned by Nestle. However, right along with those coffee beans was more than a ton of cocaine being shipped. CBS News reports that Swiss police learned about cocaine after workers in Romont told authorities about how they’d found the cocaine in the sacks of beans.

Fribourg police said workers at the plant “found an undetermined white substance when they unloaded the freshly delivered sacks of coffee beans.” Police went on to say that searching five shipping containers “delivered the same day by train” led to “the seizure of more than 500 kilos (1,103 pounds) of this drug.”

Police said in a statement that the drugs were in their own packaging and did not affect the coffee beans. CBS News reports the drugs originally came from Brazil and were labeled as being 80 percent pure with an estimated street value of more than $50 million. Police said the drugs were on their way to the “European market.”
