Apple is going to kick the iPhone Lightning port to the curb and swap it out for the USB-C port.
Apple is switching up its iPhone ports…again, claims company analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. By 2023, new iPhone users and people who are upgrading their phones may have to be introduced to iPhone’s new charging port era, USB-C.
The company claims that its making the change after receiving results from a “survey,” The Verge reports. With this new change, Kuo says the USB-C “could improve iPhone’s transfer and charging speed in hardware designs, but the final spec details still depend on iOS support.”
“My latest survey indicates that 2H23 new iPhone will abandon Lightning port and switch to USB-C port,” said Kuo in a tweet. “USB-C could improve iPhone’s transfer and charging speed in hardware designs, but the final spec details still depend on iOS support.”
He added: “It’s expected to see existing USB-C-related suppliers of Apple’s ecosystem (e.g., IC controller, connector) become the market’s focus in the next 1-2 years, thanks to vast orders from iPhones and accessories’ adoption of USB-C ports.”
For longtime iPhone users, the change isn’t really new; speculation around the day iPhone would switch up its charging port has been talked about for some time. Most were just waiting for when the time would come. The change in the ports will come in 2023.
