A Georgia mother is looking for answers after her 17-year-old daughter was killed in a four-wheeler accident.
On May 27, 17-year-old Cheyenne Grace died in Augusta at the intersection of Barton Chapel Road and Blossom Drive.
According to WJBF, Dashandra Parks stated her daughter was not at fault when a Dodge Challenger hit her, and a Richmond County Sheriff’s deputy ran her over on Barton Chapel Road.
“To see her up under that police car like that…” Parks told the news station.
Parks told the outlet that Cheyenne was no rookie when riding four-wheelers.
“This is not something she would just say, ‘Oh, I’m going to jump on and ride this today and go.'”
That Friday night, Parks said that Cheyenna was wearing a helmet, and the lights on the ATV were on.
Parks claims that her daughter is being criticized online for riding a four-wheeler on the road.
“She was crossing over, but she was sitting in the median waiting and obeying the traffic rules. She was waiting for this traffic to clear for her to get over. It wasn’t clear because she was still sitting right there, and somebody decided to come on around and knock her.”
Commissioner Alvin Mason of Augusta visited Cheyenne’s memorial on Monday.
He told WJBF, “This is part of what I’ve been talking about out here. If you look, there are really no streetlights out here, very few lights. I’ve been asking my colleagues if we need to have streetlights out here. We need to light up the place.”
Mason stated that Barton Chapel Road could easily be branded a death trap, and adding speed bumps and other traffic signals could avoid another incident like this.
He claims that if somebody is responsible, they need to be held accountable. He said the truth remains that they must address the lighting and speeding issues.
The Georgia State Patrol is reportedly investigating the incident, and as of Wednesday, the GSP crash report had not been released.
