Yesterday BET’s Stephen G. Hill issued an apology to Beyonce and Jay Z for the distasteful joke they aired through Karrueche on Monday evening’s episode of 106 & Park. “Last night on 106 & Park there was a stupid, unthoughtful joke made about a young child,” he tweeted, “We apologize publically to the child’s parents (and have done so privately) and we have taken punitive actions with those responsible. It was very bad judgment and we will serve you much better in the future. Oh, and please don’t hate on Karrueche; it was NOT her fault. We also apologize to her for putting her in that position.”
Rumor has it that the “punitive actions” taken were the firing of member(s) of the production and writing staff. Also following that statement, was news that BET’s 106 & Park will be on hiatus for a week. Whether these two things are related is to be determined.
According to Shad “Bow Wow” Moss, the hiatus had been planned prior to the Blue Ivy joke. Some are saying much of it has to do with Bow Wow’s new reoccurring role in an upcoming season of CSI, where he will be filming and not able to host the show. I’m slightly inclined to believe that however 106 & Park is known to just have guest hosts in times like these, not go on hiatus. The firing of staff makes a lot more sense as to why they wouldn’t film the show regardless.
It looks to me like The Carter’s flexed their muscles and BET learned a valuable lesson. Can 106 & Park recover or will this be the end of what’s currently the longest running show on BET’s roster?
